Every now and then something comes across the desk that just makes you go “Yeah! These people get it!” I am going to share an example with you of what I am talking about. It doesn’t mean they get everything, but it does mean they see the big picture and where marketing really, actually starts. It’s what makes things go viral because someone is so impressed the go the extra mile by the absolutely amazing effort put in by someone else.
The other day I received a copy of “Hooch” by Talon Strikes Studios and took a picture of it quick and tweeted it say something like”Hell yeah! How cool is this?” We today, I finally got a chance to actually look at it and holy crap was I impressed and you should be too. Very rarely do I see something this well done on the level of this from a person who isn’t already an established company with a bank roll to make something like this happen in any industry.
Obviously this won’t happen for the game for the public but it is this kind of personal attention, this very personal experience that can really sell a game, especially when you are trying to attract attention and get people talking about it. It makes me want to play it as soon as possible instead of just adding it to the list. That “buzz” is so very critical in maximizing your potential in sales, social media, marketing etc…. This is a very, very smart move on the part of Talon Strikes Studios and the time and attention to detail it took will most definitely pay off in a big way as long as the game itself isn’t horrible.
Not only was the marketing very smart, the artwork involved is amazing. The attention to detail in the look and how it all completely ties into the theme is perfect. Many people love to talk about theme and how it doesn’t matter as much as mechanics. I call BS on that. Theme makes you want to bring it to the table. Setting a tone or a mood can be very, very important in the having a game that gets played 3 times if you are lucky any more or 15 or more times because the publisher and designer did a superb job of implementing theme in a game. Don’t ever let yourself think that it is important. With the influx in the amount of games and the pace of them, things like this can be the difference between being the hot game of the moment and forgot about 3 months later or an instant classic that people talk about for years to come and never leave the “Must Have” list for most gamers.
You see me preach a lot about marketing, but that is because it is that important. The more publishers put out games, the more people start-up small publishing houses and the more people kickstart their projects, the more this kind of marketing is necessary. You must constantly raise the bar. No longer will home videos be okay, No longer will poor efforts cut through the crowd and allow you to fund successfully. You have to put out a package that is creative, captures attention, makes people not only see but buy into your dream as well.
Take the time to market correctly. Take the time to personalize if you can or your game lends itself to it like “Hooch” does. It is worth every extra second you put into it.
What we see here, is only ONE of the many steps it is going to take, but an impressive step it was. Well done Talon Strikes Studios. Very well done.
It’s time to step up your game everyone. Let’s see what you got 🙂
