BraveRats from Blue Orange Games was designed by Seiji Kanai of Love Letter fame and is another further demonstrates his ability to take a very simple concept and make a very effective and fun game.

Head to Head

In this very simple game from Blue Orange Games, contestants try to battle each other with 8 different cards of numerical value and a special text at the bottom of the card. It is very reminiscent of a War style game while at the same time allowing each opponent the chance to choose what card they play and strategize based on guessing with the other player is doing. Each player chooses a card, plays it face down and flips it at the same time and then resolves it by number and card text. The person with the highest scoring card wins unless the text determines otherwise. The first person to win five times wins the game!

This game is a very quick to pick games for kids of all ages and strategic enough to keep people into the game while playing it without getting bored from complete randomness. My daughter wasn’t exactly fond of the rats at first but she quickly warmed up once she started pounding Daddy into the ground while playing. It didn’t take long before we were laughing and giggling at each other as we played and tried to outguess each other. This is what we play games with our children for right?

The artwork on BraveRats is great! The kids will love it and the stock is good and should last for quite a while before wearing out. It is certainly easy and cheap to sleeve with so few cards so that would make sure the game lasted forever. The game comes in a tin box that looks amazing with raised artwork and takes very little room. I know some people don’t like tin boxes because they don’t stack well but this is a tiny box that will fit on top of any stack easy. I personally really like this.

BraveRats is a very fun and very quick game that will keep the kids entertained and for those enterprising parents or kids, they can build little tournaments of two on two and let the kids have a blast trying to one up each other. BraveRats prove you can use a variant on a theme and revitalize it, coming up with a unique enough game to provide a good time and great family interaction. There really isn’t much more to say about this game. If you are looking for a fun little two-player game for you and your kids, this is a great choice!
