“So you think you are a better shot than me? I huffed at my friend Paul. “You haven’t hit a target in the last 5 pulls!” Paul looked at me with a sheepish grin. “I’ll tell you what” he said. “Rob and I against you and Greg. Team that looses buys a round and next weeks ammo.” I thought about it for a second, looked at Greg. He just shrugged his shoulders in an why not? attitude. “You’re on.” I replied. “Ladies first.”

Pull! by Chevee Dodd, LLC is trick taking card game based the sport of trap shooting. You can play opponent vs. opponent or in teams of two. While drawing its inspiration from classic trick-taking games, it does vary in the fact that there are two tricks active each round, players or teams can not take the lead and what stands out most is there is no-trump suit. Each player starts with 10 cards and then two target cards are flipped over for the players to “shoot” at. Basically, each player takes a turn playing a card on each side of the target card. You don’t have to play in suit, but it can benefit you in the case of a tie. Be very careful to not be the one to “shoot” an animal if that is the trick in play. This will cost you if you do. The highest valued “shot” wins the trick. Each hand lasts five rounds then each player or team counts their points and the deal is passed to the next player on the left. The team wins when a set number of points are scored.
To be honest, I have played so many trick taking games that I am completely sick of them but I liked Pull! a lot and here is why. The game is playable 10 minutes out of the box. It’s very easy to learn and play and the fact that there are two active tricks happening per round is a nice feature that is pretty original for a card game while keeping the strategy light enough to pick up quickly. It lends a layer of depth in such a simple game that makes it quite fun to play. Even though there is no trump suit, playing the highest value “shot” card lends to plenty of table banter especially for trash talkers who love to rib each other. Also having the option to “distract” the trick by playing this card is a great way to spoil laid plans by the other team. It’s a nice little “screw you” mechanic especially when you have nothing to play to win the trick.
Sometimes it’s wonder how well a theme works with a game. I mean really, who would have thought of trap shooting for a card game? But it works perfect! A good theme helps take away the “oh this is just another trick taking game” feeling and supplies a unique gaming experience. This is something Pull! does fairly well. Obviously, you don’t forget it’s a card game, but the theme allows for a unique banter to help this game shine above many others of its ilk.
Since I am playing a PnP version of Pull!, I can’t speak to the component quality, but the artwork is sleek, simple and very effective. It’s easy to tell the cards apart, it’s colorful, bright and fun looking. Another bonus for a card game. I really like the look of this game and it fits it’s theme perfectly.
In conclusion, Pull! is a fast paced, fun and very social card game that is well worth it’s price and the wait on Kickstarter. For players that love trick taking games, party games like Uno or social games, then Pull! is a great pick for you!
